Patients having private health insurance coverage could pay for their own health safety but still NHS is spending almost £1 billion in a year to cover their health expenses cost. According to reports it has been noted that one in three patients getting treatment in NHS are insured with private medical plans where treatment cost can be paid by their insurance provider.
Patients avoid claiming on their insurance coverage because they take it as an excess on premium cost. People generally feel that claiming on health coverage cost is going to increase premium and they may need to pay extra charge. Otherwise their GP will omit them on asking if they are insured. HCA International commercial director, Keith Biddlestone who is owner of six private hospitals in London has told that getting private health care is individuals own choice and majority of patients choose to move between NHS and private treatment care. But the figures shows that people having private medical insurance rely on NHS care to maintain profitability. He has also commissioned the survey.
Some private schemes offer cash payments to patient who selects NHS treatment to prevent use of private treatment. Mr. Biddlestone has further told that private hospitals are best to get treatment for cancer care as it offers latest technology and people who are avoiding this are really missing an opportunity for which they are entitled. Laing and Buisson, private health analysts have reported that an estimated more than 250,000 operations are performed on patients with private health coverage each year. It costs £359 million each year. It is spending another £609 million on emergency surgical and medical treatment. Though private health insurance do not cover for emergency treatment but subsequent recovery can be received when patient move to private patient unit. In total NHS provide £968 million in a year to the patients who could be eligible to claim.
