FACETS (Fatigue: Applying Cognitive behavioural and Energy effectiveness Techniques to life Style) is a group based therapy programme initially designed by members of the psychology, research and clinical teams at Poole Hospital in Dorset and the University of Bournemouth. In Bristol, research to determine whether or not this group therapy approach was helpful for MS related fatigue was carried out in collaboration with Bournemouth and Southampton Universities and funded by the MS Society. Bristol’s participation was only possible because we already funded a specialist MS Research Unit in Bristol who were working on the physical aspects of MS fatigue. The successful outcome of the FACETS research was reported in 2013 and a one year follow up paper indicating maintained positive effects of the treatment was recently published. The success of FACETS indicates how useful non drug therapies can be. The MS Society has helped us to roll out FACETS as a group therapy at our MS Meeting Point at The Vassall Centre in Bristol by offering training courses. We have funded and will continue to fund suitably qualified therapists to attend such courses with the aim of enabling more centres to offer this very helpful therapy.
