Hatha yoga for beginners

As a massage therapist I am aware that our bodies are as individual as the experiences that shape them. Because of this, private yoga tuition can be a wonderful starting point for anyone who is new to the practice. Individual sessions offer students their own space in which to explore a range of yoga practices suitable for their specific body and lifestyle. By spending time one-to-one with your own yoga teacher you can feel comfortable in the knowledge that the postures and practices are right for you and your body, right now.
My own personal experience of yoga has been rich and varied. Over the years I have explored many different kinds of yoga and practiced with teachers both in the UK and overseas. My principle teacher is Laura Gilmore and I am a certified yoga teacher having completed my teacher training with Bristol City Yoga at Swan Yoga Retreat in Goa. This allowed me to consolidate many years of personal practice with the depth of knowledge required to be able to teach.
What can I expect?
I begin by taking some basic information about your medical history and how you’re feeling in your body and any previous experience you might have of yoga. We’ll also discuss your expectations and gain an understanding of what has brought you to yoga at this time. It may be that you are experiencing stiffness in your body or that you are coming to yoga to sleep better or cope better with the stresses of life. Whatever the reasons are for you, we will work together to create individual classes that combine movement, meditation and breathing to help bring mind and body into harmony and give you a gentle introduction to the practice of yoga.
How many sessions should I have?
The first session is an opportunity for us to learn about each other. I can get an understanding of where you’re starting from and you can get a feel for my teaching style. Usually the first class will involve some simple postures that help me understand how you feel with the yoga. Each person’s body will be different, so beginning gently means you’ll be able to get a feel for the practice too. It’s important for you to have a teacher that you feel comfortable with before making a commitment to subsequent sessions.
If after the first session you’re happy to continue I ask that new students make a commitment to the practice and attend a minimum of five classes. From the very start the attention will be personal, meaning that I can devote time to alignment and tailoring the teaching to your needs. Often this involves some gentle adjustments to help you experience where we’re going with the pose and I take care to demonstrate new techniques and share the benefits of various practices as I teach.
