A Bandon Dunes-style golf course is being built in the Chinese Region of Inner Mongolia perched on sand dunes above a reservoir. Award-winning golf-course architects Dana Fry and Jason Straka, based in Dublin Ohio, will start work on the Batu Bay project next year. It's a three hour drive from the regional capital, Ordos, with a resort hotel also planned for the site. Fry told Golf Course Architecture magazine: “We are close to finalising the masterplan. The course is built on a bluff about 30km long and thirty metres above the lake on pure sand.” Native vegetation no more than a metre high covers about 95 per cent of the area which gives it a Bandon Dunes feel to it and it needs very little earth movement. “Tees will be treated as if they are desert tee boxes with native scrub around them, and the scrub will border both sides of the holes, except in areas where we connect the turf between holes,” added Fry. “Bunkers will have a wild and woolly look. We will plant fescue everywhere except on the greens.” Construction of the course is scheduled to begin next May to open in late 2014. Closest airport is Yulin City about an hour's drive away.
