LHR Marine is delighted to introduce the new HAVi iS Intrinsically Safe Vibration Calculator. This low cost unit simply attaches to any vibrating tool using a cable or fabric tie. It is extremely easy to use and measures vibration using the points system as implemented by the Health and Safety Executive. New Health and Safety Executive guidelines insist that complex monitoring of HAVS is not essential in the workplace. Therefore the HAVi iS Intrinsically Safe Vibration Calculator is an ideal product because it does the simple function of notifying if a tool is safe – as it is being used - and does not include any advanced or complicated external software, which in turn increases costs. The HAVi iS Intrinsically Safe Vibration Calculator is the easy and cost effective way of knowing if your employees are at risk and helps compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulation 2005. The HAVi iS Intrinsically Safe Vibration Calculator is also intrinsically safe and has been specifically designed to be used in all offshore areas.
What is HAVS?
Hand Arm Vibration is caused by the transmission of vibration generated by tools and machinery to the hands and arms of equipment users. It can occur when operating machinery of a vibratory nature including electric, air, hydraulic, diesel and petrol-powered tools and equipment on a regular basis. Exposure to hand-arm vibration can lead to long term health problems however, excessive and prolonged exposure can be the cause of a range debilitating conditions that are jointly termed ‘Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome’ or HAVS.
The symptoms of HAVS can include:
- ‘Pins & Needles’ sensation in the fingers
- Numbness and loss of light touch and feeling in the fingertips
- Reduced strength and ability to grip
- Attacks of ‘white-finger’ or blanching, particularly when exposed to cold conditions
The development of HAVS is gradual and increases in severity over time. It may take a few months to several years for the symptoms of HAVS to become clinically noticeable but prolonged exposure can lead to permanent damage affecting the blood flow (vascular effect) and the loss of touch sensation (neurological effect) in fingers. HAVS is a reportable disease under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 1995.
Companies who may have already tested expensive, complex HAVS management systems are now looking for a far simpler approach and this is where HAVi can offer something unique. HAVi believe compliance doesn't have to expensive or complicated. Saving money on complex devices and computer-based systems by taking a closer look at actually what is going on enables companies to better protect their workforce by investing more in better tools and smarter processes. Getting to grips with managing HAVS is all about understanding better where the risks are in your business. Using a HAVi device you will be able to very quickly identify which tools, operators and processes are most likely to cause problems and take the appropriate corrective action.
