Grimshaw
have just started work on a new grass tennis court. The majority of tennis courts now tend to be hard
surface but there is nothing quite like the traditional feel, look and sound of
a well constructed grass court. A grass
court is also easier on the body and lends itself to serve-and-volley style of
play.
Understandably
preparation is all and a key component is the provision of adequate drainage to
allow the court to dry out uniformly.
The client
is a Queens Club member where they can boast a selection of 27 outdoor courts
including 12 grass. The Club established in 1886 can be
claimed to be “the first multipurpose sports complex ever to be built, anywhere
in the world.”
All major
tennis tournaments were originally played on grass and it was only in the
1940's that the first hard courts were
used in official tournaments. Of course
we are all looking forward to Wimbledon and wondering if it might be Murrays chance to win.
