Grimshaw Group, a family business established in 1947 has just received a Civic Award for their work on the restoration of the Sandford Parks Lido.
The award recognises “projects which, through vision, design and craftsmanship beyond the ordinary, both respect their surroundings and give an example for the future, resulting in a feature of which can be proud”.
Part of the works involved the replacement of coping stones. In order to match the original patina Grimshaw trialed various concrete blends and then treated the stones with a yoghurt and wood ash dressing to achieve the desired effect. Meanwhile the Victorian cast iron pipe work was repaired using a glass fibre reinforced resin repair system.
Russell Grimshaw, Managing Director said; “It was a delight to help restore a part of ’s historic fabric to its former glory and of course I have fond memories of swimming there from an early age.”
Cheltenham Lido was first constructed in 1935 and through the dedication of the charitable trust it has been able to refurbish and continue to provide a unique leisure venue for the residents attracting up to 200,000 visitors a year.
